The Three Words

Purpose

This format structures the entire story around three single words or very short phrases that each capture one dimension of the news. Each word acts as a bold typographic anchor, paired with a supporting line that unpacks it. The format forces extreme clarity: if the story cannot be captured in three words, it is not yet understood clearly enough.

Structure

  • The carousel opens with a headline stating the news.

  • Three slides follow, each featuring an anchor word paired with a supporting line that explains what the word means in context.

  • The carousel closes with a call to action.

Best used when

  • The news has clear, distinct dimensions that can each be captured in a word or short phrase

  • A designed, typographic visual style suits the content

  • The goal is to make the carousel feel intentional and structured rather than simply informational
